A learning environment for everyone:
"Karate is a lifelong sport - it is never too late to start." - Mike Collins
Looking for a way to stay in fit? Try something that has been around for over 2000 years - Martial Arts.
Villari's offers something for every adult, grappling to stand up fighting, forms and techniques the instructors always show the patience needed to help every student.
We encourage the participation of women, men, children, parents, and grandparents, because everyone can benefit from the study of Martial Arts. All students are treated with respect. The emphasis is on setting short term and long term goals and creating a positive atmosphere in order to achieve these goals.
Our instructors are always learning new techniques to keep the class energetic and instructional, with several instructors for the adult classes. Each instructor has their own area of expertise and their own teaching style. It is never the same workout twice! Getting fit CAN be fun! While following a standard core curriculum based on belt levels, the instructors add their own twist of interesting information and methods. All of the teachers have different styles and interpretations which helps each student understand and enjoy karate in a way that is meaningful for them.
For Men and Women:
Students learn to work safely within the limitations of their bodies. This is good for those of us who have knee or lower back issues. This is not the karate you see on TV with a drill Sargent barking out commands. The classes are fun, students work together to learn how the martial arts can enrich their lives. The adult classes are balanced with women and men of all ages. Working out with another person is more fun than using a silent impersonal machine.
"A great way to manage your health, increase confidence and relieve stress!" - David
Personal Protection:
Personnel protection is an important skill for everyone. Students in class practice real techniques on real people. Through practice, students learn that what works on one opponent will not work on another, and so multiple techniques are learned. Practicing techniques through drills allows students to overcome the flight response, the fear that hitting isn't "nice". In those first few seconds of an attack, freezing is the worst thing for a potential victim. The martial artist, through training, overcome that fear and may help to save your life.
Shaolin Animals:
The system has movements which are based on observations of the five Shaolin animals: dragon, snake, crane, leopard and tiger. These movements are incorporated in each of the ways of fighting.
Sparring, Forms, Combinations, Kempos:
Learning the martial arts routines, called forms, improves both memory and coordination. For those students who want to deepen their martial arts knowledge, there are optional classes in sparring. Sparring is a little like kick boxing but with minimal contact. It increases coordination, self control and conditioning. Other optional classes are offered in leadership, where the addition of martial arts weapons like broadswords, staff and nunchaku increases the mastery of martial arts techniques as well as improving memory and motor skills. Some of our students compete in regional Villari's tournaments to test their skills against students from other dojos. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how they have made the art their own.
